Parents are bombarded with claims that the world is a dangerous place. This culture of alarmism is weaving its way into nearly every aspect of our daily lives, making parents worry about common everyday products, food and healthy activities.

In her new book, Julie Gunlock shows how the food nannies, environmentalists, public health officials, politicians and government regulators benefit from keeping the American public scared. Alarmists understand that parents naturally worry about the health and well-being of their children and will do just about anything to keep their kids safe. By leveraging this natural anxiety, alarmists gain the trust of parents and convince them to perpetuate the myths of danger, change their own behavior, and demand government “protect” them and their children.

The culture of alarmism’s greatest damage comes after they’ve successfully scared the general public. That’s typically when the politicians and government regulators descend with promises to “save” us from these dangers, through additional regulation and programs that expand their power base. The cost of this dynamic is high wasted tax dollars, higher costs and inferior goods for consumers, and fewer jobs in companies navigating through red tape. More importantly, we all end up paying a personal cost with needless worry and a less free, less happy society.

We deserve better.

If you feel like you’re living in an episode of Lost in Space and are tired of the constant “Danger! Danger!” warnings, this book is for you.

If you love facts and hate junk science, this book is for you.

If you think you know better than a government bureaucrat what’s best for your family, this book is for you.

If you understand that corporations generally don’t have an interest in killing you and your kids, this book is for you.

If you’re tired of the sancti-mommy at school drop off making you feel like a bad parent, this book is for you.

If you suspect the world isn’t as dangerous as everyone says it is, this book is for you.

As the mother of three young children, Gunlock understands that moms and dads already have enough to worry about. Alarmist warnings often distract parents from the real dangers and legitimate risks facing kids. Nervous parents who feel overwhelmed by the conflicting reports about what’s safe and what’s not deserve a little honesty and should be spared the constant drum beat of hysteria that comes from environmental, food and public health nannies.

This book aims to do just that, and encourages all Americans to have some perspective, use common sense, enjoy life, and to reject the culture of alarmism.

I picked this book up after reading an op-ed by the author about GMO foods. I am not a mother, but I am a science-minded person that allows research to guide me (and I don't mean internet blog research). I found this book to be a a nice change of pace from the scaremongering that I read all too often in the news, spread through poorly researched blogging, and seeping into the minds of people at large (who then think they are well-informed). I wish this book had a little more detail in some of the studies it presented that debunked popular claims, but it's s great starting point for anyone that wants to do their own research into REAL studies (it has a lot of great resources listed).

My critique is this: I think that this book is definitely the antithesis of the alarmists that the author is writing against, so she is on-point there. What I don't like about it, and what keeps it from five stars for me, is it is EXACTLY the antithesis of what the author is writing against (I felt like it was a little TOO much anti-"them" propaganda with the word "alarmist" appearing way too often). I agree with what the author is trying to convey to the reader, I just think it could have been presented better. On the other hand, this is the type of book that is out there to get you to think, so maybe the excitement in the writing is suppose to get the reader excited about researching a topic and going against popular opinion (based on scientific evidence).

Cupcakes to Chemicals eBook Julie Gunlock Reviews

I am tired of people telling me what I can eat, drink, do or not do. I hope cupcake to chemicals will give me additional ammunition to put these busy bodies in their place.
Not at all what I hoped for when purchasing the book!
This book was very informative. Humorous at the same time. It encourages me to use a common sense approach in reacting to next weeks ‘dire warning’ that something I’ve been doing for my last 68 years may reduce my life span to less than 50. Example yes, I have drank from a garden hose from time to time. I’m recommending this book to my friends so they don’t get spooked every time the media announces a new study of what’s bad for you. Hardly a week goes by that a firestorm of warnings sweeps through all the media shows telling us about a new danger in our everyday habits. What the media doesn’t tell you is exactly how much of the ‘bad stuff’ was fed to a rat in order to make it sick, or what industry (like the bottled water company) was behind the study that your tap water is deadly. Ms Gunlock’s has a humorous writing style and yet her examples are very well sourced. It’s a worthwhile read for anyone who has ever been influenced by the media hype.
Everyone should read this book! I ordered because I am so tired of hearing about all the things we should worry about and keep away from. This books was easy to read, fun, factual and backed up with research information at the back. Anyone can check her information as a follow up. Whenever I hear of some new thing that we should shun I am always suspicious and start researching to find out the facts and the truth. This book validates what I have thought all along.
I liked this because it doesn't just tell you to believe what is written. Instead the book encourages you to question alarmists, do a little research, and decide for yourself. I recommend it.
This gal really takes the culture of alarmism to task and gives us a way to stand up and fight back against all of the sky is falling groups!
The book could have been distilled into about two chapters. I was looking for more specifics and less opinion. The chapter on BPA and Pesticides was the kind of information I was looking for - some specific information to counter the organic mommy mafia.
