Private Ian Kanters has just been initiated into the renowned ranger division of the Bevish Empire--a space-faring, Victorian-Era society. He is slightly apprehensive, however, as his first assignment is escorting a noble family on a wilderness expedition.

But their destination, the newly-acquired planet of Orinoco, has a savage reputation that its wildlife and climate quickly lives up to. His company of rangers is also not nearly so easy to win over as he had hoped. His superior immediately doesn't like him, though he finds the margrave’s daughter to be unexpectedly distracting.

But that’s only the beginning as they trek into the vast wilderness to the adventure Ian has been waiting his whole life for.

Book 1 of the Over Guard series -- Followed by "Sky Eyes."

The Marcher Lord Over Guard Book 1 eBook Glenn A Wilson

"The Marcher Lord" Universe, has a bit of a Steam Punk feel to it, but not quite. It's almost as if a Steam Punk universe stops its convoluted ways and decides to develop a more traditional technology and reaches the stars and meets up with aliens.

In this universe, Christianity is still the dominant religion, and this isn't a religion similar to Christianity, it is absolutely Christianity and a couple biblical references and quotes solidify this feature. The Bevish empire is roughly analogous to the British empire, while the Dervish seem roughly analogous to the French empire. The Bevish seem to speak English and the Dervish seem to speak a sort of French. The relationship between men and women seems to be roughly analogous to the 1700s on Earth. Women need to be protected.

I did find it odd that while the culture in the part of the Universe in which the Bevs and the Dervs exist corresponds strongly to Europe, and much of the culture is clearly handed down and evolved from European Earth, other than the aforementioned biblical quotes, there seems nothing in this universe that indicates the inhabitants have even heard about Earth or are aware their culture is lifted whole cloth from the distant past on Earth. It is a gap in the logic that I found disconcerting and needs to be plugged in subsequent novels.

The story is about a poor young man on the Bevish home planet who joins the Army to escape poverty. He manages to graduate into an elite corps and is assigned to a planet just ceded by the Dervish to the Bevish. His first assignment is for his company of elite troops to act as a bodyguard for a Marcher Lord from a rural distant planet who like to hunt big game. There are 2 beautiful daughters, and a lot of incidents that COULD have led somewhere, but nothing comes of it. All they do is hunt. and then when the poor young man and one of the beautiful daughters is in danger, the story just stops.

Character development is weak, everyone is pretty much a stereotype we've seen a million times before in books and in Hollywood movies and no one is all that interesting or all that believable.

Now, all that negativity aside, I DO think the book, overall, has some value. The universe itself leaves tantalizing hints that it could contain some VERY interesting stories. But unfortunately, "The Marcher Lord" isn't one of them.

If I could direct Mr. Wilson's writing activity for a while, I'd have him edit this book some more, it is easily 30% too long in its present form. He should use that space created by pulling that 30% of doing nothing out ,and work on character development. I'd have him identify the gaps in logic not only in the Universe he has built, but in the story he is trying to tell. I don't think he can build a series franchise on such a weak foundation, so writing subsequent novels seems impractical to me at this point.

The book is worth a read, but I don't think it is worth $3.00 US for the read.

The Marcher Lord Over Guard Book 1 eBook Glenn A Wilson Reviews

This book on its own is only a 2 because it is not a complete story. At the end it is all cliffhanger with nothing at all resolved. To me publishing a "part one" is a cheat unless it is clearly labeled as only a part and not a whole book.
In this part of the story there are passing references to being Christian, but it doesn't interfere with the story and the book is not preaching at the reader.
That said, I liked the characters and the world setting, and I am reading for free (LOVE Unlimited) - so I read the second part, Sky Eyes. That had a conclusion acceptable for me as a reader, although it is obvious that the hero is intended to appear elsewhere in the future. As a two book set the story was a 4 star to me (with points off for the Christian references becoming increasingly intrusive in the second book without in any way affecting either the characters or the plot.
Though I'm not much of a science fiction reader, I liked this book. It took me into an alternate world that I want to know more about. It's written well and sets the foundation for several books to follow. I'm disappointed, though, that I have to wait for the next installment.
The world built in this novel is quite interesting and certainly leaves me interested in more. However, the book is slow and at times it feels like not much at all is happening. When there is action, it does a good job of building the excitement as the characters go out to hunt animals that could easily kill them if things don't go their way. Overall, I would say it is an OK read despite being plodding at times and for me was worth the $3 I paid for it and I will definitely pick up the sequel when it is published.
The author created a very interesting world that his story takes place in, and did a great job at painting a picture of what it was like to be there. You really get a feel for the characters, and enjoy learning about this new universe you are being introduced to. There are many interesting dynamics to the new civilizations in this book and their histories, and it's fun to see in what ways they parallel our own. Not to mention the ending really leaves you wanting for the next installment of the series!
The pace of the novel is slow purposeful drama building. If you prefer fast action novels then look for another story. The author is not in a rush to get you anywhere, you are just along for the journey and events unfold. The focus of the plot is on Private Ian Kanters on his first assignment after training camp, which is escorting a noble family on a wilderness expedition. The setting reminds me of a 1930s African safari with savage wildlife and native porters. Our private is both skillful and of sound character. We hear a lot about introspective thoughts and his youthful inexperience with dealing with people. There is some back story mystery which is strongly hinted at but not developed. The action is well developed but it revolves around the dangers of the hunt. This is not a military novel as I hoped but that a coming of age story in a science fiction setting.

Sadly it has a cliff hanger ending and feels like an incomplete end to the novel. Perhaps if the next book is $0.99 I will buy it to see how it ends, then again I keep dozens of books in my wish list and probably will not return to see what happens with the private and the two daughters. No regrets in reading the story because it was interesting and a different sort of book for me. However, I just can not take such aborted endings.
